A long history in innovation and sustainability

Founded and owned by Rúnar Þór Þórarinsson and Maria Huld Petursdottir.

Askur Games' founders have spent over three decades working across game design, sustainability, and business innovation. Early in their careers, they authored and published Iceland's first three roleplaying games — Askur Yggdrasils, Fræknir ferðalangar, and Ævintýralandið — and went on to design games for Funcom's Anarchy Online and 32 live betting titles for Novomatic Lottery Solutions. Rúnar also spent time at CCP Games, working on the game design of EVE Online and World of Darkness.

Rúnar previously served as Director of Sustainability and Innovation at land-based aquaculture company First Water, and Maria is a Senior Translator and Team Lead at the Icelandic Foreign Ministry. Together, they've built a firm that moves fluidly between disciplines — from game studios to aquaculture ventures to grant-writing consultancy.

ÉirÍs — land-based salmon farming in Ireland

Askur Games is the founder and lead of the ÉirÍs consortium, proposing a 25,000-tonne-per-year fully land-based salmon farm in a Gaeltacht region of Ireland. The project draws on applicable, hands-on Icelandic experience in land-based aquaculture, paired with Ireland's favorable environment, commercial harbors, and closeness to European markets.

Designed with Salmon Edge, the farm is built around eco-friendly, phased construction — no escapes, no plastic, no pesticides, and roughly 90% of waste captured and converted into biogas and bio-fertilizer through an eco-factory. The consortium is currently working with Irish investors, communities, and authorities to bring the project to life.
